POST GRADUATE WORK PERMIT
The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows eligible graduates from designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada to temporarily work in the country. Graduation from a DLI doesn't automatically qualify one for a PGWP; eligibility depends on the institution and the completed program.
• For online studies until August 31, 2024, at least 50% of the program must be completed online or in-class in Canada.
• Starting September 1, 2024, at least 50% of the program must be completed in-class in Canada.
• PGWP validity varies based on the level and duration of the study program.
• For master's degree programs completed after February 15, 2024, lasting less than two years, graduates may be eligible for a three-year PGWP.
• Individuals in programs lasting less than eight months are ineligible for a PGWP.
• Programs lasting at least eight months but less than two years may grant a PGWP valid for the same duration as the study program.
• Programs lasting two years or more may grant a PGWP valid for three years.
• If multiple programs are completed, each program must be PGWP eligible and last at least eight months to combine their lengths for a PGWP.
• If a passport expires before the PGWP, the permit's validity may be limited to the passport's expiry date, requiring an extension for the full validity period.
Eligibility:
• To be eligible for a PGWP from inside Canada, applicants must apply within 180 days after graduation.
• Confirmation of program attendance, name, and duration is necessary through documents like degrees, transcripts, or official school letters.
• The study permit must have been valid at some point during these 180 days.
• Options for individuals with expiring study permits include applying for a visitor record to extend stay or leaving Canada and applying for the PGWP.
• Full-time student status during each semester of the study program is generally required unless exceptions apply.
• Program requirements may vary, particularly for schools in Quebec, necessitating checking eligibility criteria before enrolling in a designated learning institution (DLI).
